Black Caps crash to 10-wicket defeat

Published: 8:13PM Monday November 19, 2012 Source: ONE Sport

Another Black Caps batting collapse has seen them fall to a 10-wicket defeat on day three of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

New Zealand arrived at the ground on the third day on level pegging with their hosts and a genuine chance to put themselves in a winning position with the bat.

However they failed to capitalise as they were rolled for 118 shortly after lunch, leaving Sri Lanka needing only 93 runs to win the Test.

The Sri Lankans did it with ease, reaching the target inside a session with debutant Dimuth Karunaratane scoring 60 off as many balls, while Tharanga Paranavitana finished on 31 not out.

The real damage was done by left arm spinner Rangana Herath, who thrived taking six wickets to finish with figures of 6/43 and give him 11 wickets in the match.

None of New Zealand's batsmen managed to get going with Daniel Flynn the only one to reach 20 as they looked totally uncomfortable against the spinners.

Martin Guptill was the first batsman to go this morning when he was beaten by a straight one from Nuwan Kulasekara and was bowled for 13.

Kulasekara had Kane Williamson next as he nicked one down the leg side to be caught behind for 10.

Herath then began to spin a web and caught captain Ross Taylor (18) leg before wicket before James Franklin (2) was stumped as he got caught trying to charge down the wicket.

Flynn looked to fight back as he calmly made his way to 20, but Herath beat him when he got one to turn back off the wicket and sneak between bat and pad.

The very next ball Herath had his fifth as he got Doug Bracewell LBW after he shuffled across his stumps.

After lunch it didn't get much better as Jeetan Patel was caught at silly mid-on off the bowling of Suraj Randiv. Trent Boult then added a bit of excitement smashing two sixes over cow corner before he edged one to Mahela Jayawardene at first slip to give Randiv his second wicket.

The next Test begins on Sunday in Colombo.
