Ex-wife of death-faker sentenced

Published: 3:55PM Thursday August 10, 2006 Source: RNZ

A woman who spent five years pretending her husband had drowned before admitting he faked his own death has been sentenced to five months home detention.

Sheila Gordon told police last August that her estranged husband Harry Bentley Gordon had faked his own death when he disappeared in a so-called boating accident in 2000.

But he was in fact alive and well, living in New Zealand under an assumed name and with a new wife.

Sheila Gordon pleaded guilty to her role in the attempted fraud that could have netted $3.5 million from her husband's life insurance policy.

Harry Gordon was arrested when he returned to Australia in November last year, and was sentenced to at least 12 months jail.
