John has been a reporter for Close Up since it began. Prior to
that he had been on Holmes since 1999. He is based in Christchurch
and has been making television news and current affairs for over 20
In 1981, John started work in radio before moving into television in 1984, where he worked for the Seven Network in Melbourne, Australia. In 1986, he moved to the United Kingdom where he worked as a freelance reporter for Thames Television and as a producer for the main news agencies.
Later, John went on to Superchannel News, a tri-lingual service for Europe. After this, he became producer of the World Business Report for BBC World, produced a business show for TV Tokyo and was the CTS Taiwan London Correspondent. John has covered stories across the globe with features from Europe, Asia and the US.
John was educated at Christchurch Boys' High School and has won a number of key media awards including Qantas Media Awards for Best Live Reporter, Best Environment Report, Best Lifestyle Report, Best Human Relations Story and Best Scripting.
Off screen, John enjoys fly-fishing, and one day hopes to actually catch a fish as opposed to fences, trees and hats.
John says he enjoys finding the extraordinary in the everyday and ordinary. While the hard-hitting stories are important, it's not always about the high-profile newsmakers. He believes most people have a story to tell.
