Poultry farm fined under Fair Trading

A Christchurch poultry farm has been fined $35,000, plus court costs, for breaching the Fair Trading Act.

The Commerce Commission took Weedons Poultry Farm Limited to court for selling containers of eggs marked as free range, when some were not.

The offences by the poultry farm took place between August 1999 and August 2000 when the company benefited by more than $32,000.

Judge Ray Kean said the case was one of deliberate misconduct, designed to con the public into buying the product.
