Artist puts money where mouth is

Jayne Shearer is well practised in smooching, but she does it for art - the Wellington based amateur artist's signature style is all about puckering up.

The 24-year-old layers her lips and kisses paper, and says that practice makes perfect when it comes to being a good kisser.

"[Although] someone actually thought I didn't have any arms, and that's why I painted with my lips," Shearer says.

Shearer kisses each painting thousands of times and reapplies after each smooch, resulting in a lipstick collection to be envied.

She says her work signifies beauty, glamour and consumer society.

Shearer's works are on display in a Wellington cafe, and sell for over $1,000 a piece.

Art enthusiast Loma Dellabarca says Shearer's art is "so creative& you know they don't conform to a normal type of painting, and the lipsticks and that are great."

Apart from occupational hazards ("[I get cramp] not so much in my lips, [but] my whole face, so I definitely suffer for my art"), it is fair to say her pictures are worth more than a thousand kisses.
