Geologists say that in the next 30 years there is a 30% chance of a magnitude 8 earthquake along the alpine fault.
The fault runs for 650km along the base of the Southern Alps, from Fiordland to Marlborough.
Last year's Canterbury quake was a 7.1 magnitude, so to most of us, an 8 magitude quake is a scary thought.
But to geologists, it's fascinating.
A group of 40 geologists have converged on a small West Coast creek bed, just north of Franz Josef, to drill into the alpine fault in an attempt to unearth its secrets.
