A new survey shows that Kiwis are deeply worried about their finances, but most (78%) do not want to know anything more about the recession.
The Attitude New Zealand report by research company Perceptive includes New Zealand's first stress index.
It found that financial insecurity is the top cause of rising stress levels in New Zealand.
Most of those surveyed are not planning to buy big ticket items over $2,000 in the next six months, and of the 29% minority who are, most are planning to spend money on holidays, vehicles or house renovations.
Over 80% are planning on reining in spending, with 38% planning to put any government tax refunds towards savings.
Banks, brands, and what on earth is sustainability?
The survey shows the majority of Kiwis (91%) still have faith in the banking system with most believing their money is secure in local banks.
However, only 1% of Kiwis have complete trust in New Zealand businesses. The Warehouse and Kiwibank were perceived to be the most trustworthy businesses with TSB bank and Fonterra also getting a mention.
The most inspiring business leader was The Warehouse founder Stephen Tindall, followed by economist Gareth Morgan and property developer Bob Jones.
Those surveyed connected with the Pak n Save brand most strongly and was a brand they felt they needed the most.
Air New Zealand was the most desired brand.
TradeMe 28% was the favourite online store followed by EziBuy 4% and Amazon 3%.
The survey also found most Kiwis (71%) did not understand the meaning of 'sustainability', though the three companies thought to have led 'sustainable thinking' were Meridian Energy, Fonterra and The Warehouse.
