Rick van Barneveld has taken up the role of general manager of KiwiRail Network, which is responsible for maintenance and improvement of the rail network.

Van Barneveld is a former chief executive of Transit, an organisation he held a number of roles in.

He has recently been working on a rail project in Queensland.

The role he is taking up at KiwiRail was previously held by William Peet, who left in October.

KiwiRail Network was formerly known as Ontrack.

The business is responsible for maintenance and improvements to the rail network, including the major upgrades in Auckland and Wellington and electrification of the Auckland rail system.

It also controls the operation of trains on the national network.
