Rose McIver as Liv in iZombie

What’s going to happen in iZombie’s 5th and final season? We sorted the rumours from the facts and can guarantee one thing – we will be crying at the end.

Liv and the gang are in control

When season five starts, Liv has taken over the role of the Renegade, smuggling people in and out of New Seattle, Peyton is now the mayor, Major is the new leader of Fillmore Graves and even Blaine is doing his bit, smuggling brains into the city to feed its zombie residents. So now all our favourite characters are working towards a common goal.

“Knowing this is the final season, it felt ok to put all of our characters in positions of some power,” creator Rob Thomas told TVLine. “They really do have a big hand in controlling the fate and destiny of Seattle and zombie-kind.”

But they won’t always agree

Major may be making a lot of changes to his predecessor’s regime, but Thomas has hinted that he and Peyton will disagree on how things should be done.

Then there’s Blaine, who never misses a chance to create trouble. “Blaine gets to a very dark place this season,” Thomas says. “He’s certainly looking out for number one. One of the big questions is: What, if any, comeuppance is Blaine going to get for his five years of being a dick?”

Is there time for romance?

Liv and Major’s relationship wasn’t in a good place at the end of season 4, but they’ve come back from worse right?

Thomas says Liv will have more important things on her mind this season, so there won’t be much time for romance. He has promised, however, that there will be a definitive answer either way about their relationship.

No one is giving anything away but Thomas did say that being Liv’s boyfriend “is like being the drummer for Spinal Tap. It tends not to end well.”

Ravi is working on the cure

One big question this season will be whether or not Ravi and the CDC scientists will be able to find a cure for zombie-ism. A cure could change everything and give Seattle a chance to return to what it was before.

But would everyone want a cure? Kiwi Rose McIver, who plays Liv, told Collider she was torn over whether Liv should be cured or not.

Liv will see her family

What we do know for sure about the final season is that Liv will see her mother and brother again, something McIver was happy about even though her character finds it difficult.

“I know for me, as an actor, that was really exciting to have this whole window into a different part of Liv to look into. It’s something that she had buried and ignored for a long time.”

No one is safe

Sadly, knowing it’s the last season, we could see the death of a major character before the end. Thomas is only stoking our fears too. “I would always brace yourself,” he told TV Guide. “That absolutely could happen.”

What about Seattle?

Like real-life America, iZombie’s Seattle is a city divided. There are extremists on both sides and humans and zombies are struggling to co-exist in New Seattle.

“Seattle is now a city that can blow up at any moment,” Thomas told Variety. “All it’s going to take is one spark, and humans and zombies are going to start killing each other in the streets.”

The ending will answer most of our questions

Thankfully, Thomas knew season 5 would be the show’s last so he was able to write a satisfying ending to the series.

“This season we were told 'you’re getting one and no more,' so we thought we’re going to answer all these questions for the fans,” Thomas says. “There might be a couple of lingering questions that are fun thought experiments, but fans should expect a ton of resolution at the end of this season.”

Season 5 of iZombie premieres Friday 3 May at 6pm. Same day as the U.S.
