In the small, sleepy Scottish village of Kirkdarroch everyone knows everyone and their quiet, idyllic life is rarely disturbed.

But one night, the community's illusions of contentment are shattered when the house of a seemingly happy couple, Tom and Kate Kendrick, goes up in flames, killing Kate and her three daughters.

Tom, played by Broadchurch actor David Tennant, survives the blaze and is rushed to hospital.

But was this fatal fire a tragic accident or something more sinister?

Deadwater Fell follows the lives of two couples, the Kendricks and their friends Jess and Steve, not just in the aftermath of the fire, but in the days and weeks leading up to it.

Tom is the trusted and well-liked local GP who appeared to have the perfect life with wife Kate and their three daughters – so could he have murdered them?

Kate (Anna Madeley) is a beloved teacher at the local primary school who suffered depression after the birth of her third child. Could she have done something unforgivable?

Jess (played by The Good Wife’s Cush Jumbo) is an outsider who moved to Kirkdarroch to be with Steve and has formed a close bond with fellow teacher Kate. But does she have secrets that could change everything?

Steve (Matt McNulty) is a police sergeant in a village that doesn’t often deal with much crime. He has two sons from a previous marriage and he and Jess are struggling to have a child of their own. How will this terrible crime affect him?
