The world's shortest man He Pingping who stood at just over 2'5" (74.6cm), has died in Rome, aged 21, bbc.co.uk reports.

The website reported that the native of China, who had a form of primordial dwarfism, was in Rome taking part in a television show when he suffered chest problems.

He was admitted to hospital and died on Saturday, though his death has only just been announced.

Guinness World Records said he had made a "huge impact around the world".

"He brightened up the lives of everyone he met, and was an inspiration to anyone considered different or unusual," Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of London-based Guinness World Records, said.

Pingping's body will be returned to China for burial at his family's request.
