An explosion in a mine in north-west Turkey has left 15 or 16 workers trapped underground and emergency services are trying to free them, broadcaster CNN Turk reported on Friday.

The explosion, probably caused by methane gas, took place in a mine close to the city of Bursa, the broadcaster added.

It quoted local mayor Sadi Kurtulan as saying subsidence in the mine had trapped the workers at a depth of 220 metres.
