An undersea volcano has erupted off the coast of Tonga.

Smoke, steam and ash soared thousands of metres into the sky in what scientists say is a significant eruption and the eruption could be seen from the beach in the capital, Nuku'alofa.

Tonga's residents are not reported to be in any danger.
