Six people have been confirmed dead in Tonga and four are missing following a four metre wave, which has also caused much damage.

People moved to higher ground and no casualties have been reported despite the "significant" waves, a spokesman says.

Tonga reported tidal surges on some islands.

Samoa was hit with six to eight metre waves on the south coast earlier on Wednesday.

There were "bigger than usual" waves in the Cook Islands, with swells up to 1m being reported in Rarotonga.

In Tokelau, which comprises three low-lying atolls, people remained on alert and were taking precautions and moving to higher ground.

No high waves have been seen but people are waiting to see what will come.

Niue is reasonably safe because it is high and the concern there is for people out on the water, the spokesman says.

"Reasonable" sized waves had been seen and the earthquake that sparked the tsunami was felt there.

In Suva, Fiji there are reports of waves hitting around 10am local time but no damage has been reported.

Neither Vanuatu, Kiribati, New Caledonia nor the Solomon Islands have reported high waves.
