Those who believe in the decline and ultimate collapse of Western civilisation might point accusingly for evidence at a woman who lives in ramshackle series of apartments in near-rural New Jersey, and seems perfectly normal except for her often-stated desire to increase her weight to 450 or so kilograms, or one old fashioned half a tonne.

Donna Simpson is making an Everest of her own body, and pulling herself to this pinnacle with her mouth. Or she's digging her grave with it; though she avers that she is healthy.

Currently her weight hovers at around 270 kgs, or 600 pounds. From now on I'll give the imperial equivalents because they seem more imperial. Donna Simpson is soft-spoken. She is fond of pop music. It wouldn't be unfair to say that she is enjoying the attention her quest has provoked. When we visited her last week, she was excited that Reuters would be following in our footsteps several days later. She likes to recount the television interviews she has done, with whom, and what the interview was about. They are variations on the theme of, "Sit back, and look at this extremely fat woman."

Having received encouragement from the FA, or "Fat Admirer" community, Donna believes she is a sex symbol.

FAs favour all different kinds of women. Your chubby women (around 120kg) who are pursued by, yes, chubby chasers. Then your BBWs (Big Beautiful Women) tip the scales at anything under 400 pounds. SSBBWs are over that mark. The SS is for Super-sized. Such physical bombshells are able to earn, as Donna does, money over the internet from websites, posing in various permutations of gluttony and subservience for FAs.

FAs are generally thinner men, but women too can be connoisseurs of cellulite. I'm not sure these arrangements are as much about sex as they are about ritual; some would argue the two are indistinguishable, and they're welcome to do so. Anyway, Donna recounted for me how one of her most popular "sets" or sets of photographs involved her being shackled to a refrigerator, and consuming the contents. In another "set" she was force fed through a tube by a friend who weighs 650 pounds. She said she didn't find this particularly arousing.

Well, we're agreed on that.

I found Donna polite, and able to laugh at herself. I'm not convinced by her protestations that if you gorge yourself on healthy food, it's more beneficial than eating rubbish. Whatever she is doing, it's difficult to say the effect is anything more reprehensible than the 10 plastic surgery procedures small-time reality star Heidi Montag recently had in an afternoon. I'm not saying the latter is sexy, either. What I did notice about Donna was that everything slowed down around her. When you're 600 pounds, it's impossible to move quickly. She needed items brought to her, like tables and stronger chairs. She became the centre of things.
