A strong earthquake of 6.8 magnitude struck 290 km east southeast of Tadine, Loyalty Islands, in New Caledonia, the US Geological Survey said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no threat of a tsunami. It warned, however, that earthquakes of that magnitude sometimes generate local tsunamis that could be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometres of the earthquake epicenter.
"Authorities in the region of the epicenter should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action," the centre said on its website.
