A US soldier has been charged with "waterboarding" his four-year-old daughter because she could not recite her ABCs.

The Telegraph reports that Joshua Tabor allegedly told police he had used the technique because he was angry and he knew his daughter was scared of water.

The 27-year-old had recently gained custody of the girl and it is claimed he said she "squirmed" as he pushed her under the water three or four times.

Tabor was arrested after he was seen wearing a Kevlar military helmet and was threatening to smash windows.

When police went to his house Tabor's girlfriend told them about the alleged torture.

The Telegraph reports that the daughter was found hiding in a cupboard with bruises on her back and throat.

Tabor has been charged with assault and ordered to stay on the military base until his court appearance later in the week.

Waterboarding is a controversial torture technique used to interrogate suspects, where water is poured over them so they think they are drowning.
