A fisherman who fell overboard while trying to deter a white pointer from nibbling his boat's outboard motor was circled by the same shark while in the water.

The man told rescuers that the 4.5 metre white pointer circled him up to five times while he was in the water, before it disappeared.

The man was anchoring his boat off Point Peron in Rockingham, south of Perth, on Saturday morning when he heard a noise from behind the boat. He saw a shark, described as a 4.5 metre white pointer, nibbling at the boat's motor, police said.

The man tried to push the shark away with an oar but dropped the oar and fell overboard.

"So he's now in the water, his boat's in gear and it's heading off," Western Australian Department of Fisheries spokesman Tony Cappelluti told the ABC.

"So of course he couldn't get back to the boat, so he then states that the shark's reappeared, circled him four or five times and then disappeared."

The 35-year-old Rockingham man managed to flag down a passing boat.

Rockingham Volunteer Sea Rescue Group skipper Colin Lowson said the man was shaking when he arrived at the rescue centre.

"The guy was shaken up, very shaken up," Lowson told The West Australian.

"It was a big shark and he came face to face with it."

Water police later located his boat about three to four kilometres from its original location, a police statement said.
