Police say a suspect in the killings of four officers in Washington was not in a Seattle house that they had surrounded.
Thirty-seven-year-old Maurice Clemmons is known to have been near the cafe at the time of the shootings. Officers had surrounded the house in Seattle in the belief that Clemmons was holed up inside.
However, the BBC reports that police say Clemmons was not on the premises.
People who knew Clemmons had told police that he had been shot in the torso.
The four police officers - Mark Renninger, Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold and Greg Richards - were ambushed at a Washington state coffee house near the McChord Air Force Base on Monday (NZT).
The officers were sitting in the coffee house prior to their shifts. They were on their laptops planning their day's shift when a gunman walked in and began shooting.
It's reported that the killer fled but authorities said he had been wounded by one of his victims.
A couple of months ago another officer in the area was assassinated in his police car, however, there is no suggestion the two incidents are connected.
