Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Thursday his government should serve out its full three-year term rather than call an early election to break the nation's political deadlock over climate-change policy.

Rudd was speaking to reporters for the first time since the Senate on Wednesday rejected his proposed scheme to cut carbon emissions for a second time, giving him a trigger to call an early election over the issue.

The next general election is not due till late 2010.
