They tried to escape but in the end, the Australian police caught one of the culprits - by the tail.
The rat was one of six which had built their nest of grass and weeds near the warm engine of an unroadworthy car.
They were made homeless last week when police in southwest Victoria pulled over the Toyota sedan after noticing that the car's front bumper was attached with duct tape.
Police lifted the bonnet to find the engine covered with grass and weeds that the rats had used to build their home.
Two rats jumped out and ran away but an officer grabbed a third by the tail, while the others hid.
The driver, a man from Stawell, was given seven days to fix the vehicle.
