The big wet looks to have returned to Queensland's north with a vengeance.

The state's Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning of more flash flooding throughout the region and king tides north of Bowen.

It was devastating news for the flood-ravaged north following torrential rain overnight which again boosted floodwaters.

The Herbert River at Ingham is expected to return to its earlier peak of 12.2 metres.

The sugar cane town north of Townsville has been deluged since Monday after a tropical cyclone raged over the far north.

Thousands of houses were swamped and hundreds of residents were evacuated to higher ground when the Herbert River peaked.

The floodwaters began to recede on Friday and the Bruce Highway was reopened south of Ingham, only to be cut off again on Saturday.

Bobcats and bulldozers moved into Ingham on Friday to start the massive clean-up, but that has now been put on hold.

The Herbert River is expected to return to peak levels due to another 236mm of rain drenching Ingham in past 24 hours.

Further north, Innisfail copped 150mm in three hours.

Jeff Carey, from the Brisbane Bureau of Meteorology, says the Johnson River at Innisfail is also flooded.

"We expect the Herbert River to rise to previous levels at Gairloch but if there is more rain it could rise beyond the
previous peak," Carey said.

"But the rain is expected to ease as the low moves further south."
