A Miami police officer shot a naked man to death after he refused to stop eating another mans face on a motorway off-ramp.
The survivor, who police think may have been homeless and was lying down when attacked, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, the Miami Herald reported.
Sources say the surviving man had virtually no face and was unrecognisable. He remains in intensive care at Ryder Trauma Centre in Miami.
The Miami Heralds reported a officer saw the man chewing on the other mans face and ordered him to back off over a loudspeaker, and that another police officer soon approached the unidentified attacker.
"The officer, who has not been identified, approached and, seeing what was happening, also ordered the naked man to back away," a police spokesperson said.
"When he continued the assault, the officer shot him. The attacker failed to stop after being shot, forcing the officer to continue firing."
The incident, which came as crowds descended upon South Beach for the annual Urban Beach Week hip-hop festival, halted traffic for several hours.
Police theorise the attacker might have been suffering from
"cocaine psychosis", a drug-induced craze that bakes the body
internally and often leads the affected to strip naked to try and
