A bill giving same sex couples the right to adopt has been
passed by both houses of the NSW parliament after the Legislative
Council voted in support of the legislation tonight.
In the vote, upper house MPs voted 22-15 in favour of the bill,
after agreeing to two amendments.
The bill, introduced by independent lower house MP Clover Moore,
passed the lower house by just two votes last week.
MPs were given a rare conscience vote on the legislation.
The upper house agreed to an amendment by Attorney-General John
Hatzistergos, which narrowed an exemption for faith-based groups
granted in a prior amendment of Planning Minister Frank
Sartor.
An amendment from Fred Nile which sought that more information
about prospect adoptive parents be given to birth parents was also
supported.
The amended bill will now go back to the lower house, where it will
again be put to a vote.
