More wintry weather is set to batter Britain this week with forecasters issuing warnings of heavy rain and snow across the country.

The Met Office is predicting that storms will arrive in southern England and Wales on Tuesday before spreading across the country overnight.

Up to 20 cm of snow is expected in hilly areas while heavy rain is also forecast to cause some localised flooding.

The continuing bad weather comes after the coldest snap for 20 years caused chaos last week, closing schools and bringing widespread transport disruption.

The Local Government Association says council reserves of grit have been "massively depleted" but that local authorities are working with the Highways Agency to ensure supplies do not run out completely.
