Missing adventure kayaker Andrew McAuley is being remembered at a memorial service at the Macquarie Lighthouse in Vaucluse in Sydney's east on Monday.
The Kayak's designer, Paul Hewitson, told Fairfax newspapers revelations to be released in a documentary about the trip would be
McAuley's last gift to his family.
McAuley, 39, crossed 1,500 kilometres of the Tasman Sea towards Milford Sound.
On February 9 he was within 54 kilometres of New Zealand, 30 days after leaving Australia in his attempt to become the first person to paddle across the Tasman Sea.
It is believed he drowned in 15 degree water when the kayak capsized while he was asleep.
Hewitson said video footage and photographs recovered from the kayak had helped him to understand what happened.
"I've worked out what happened, down to one or two of the finer points," he said.
"I know from this video he is saying, 'This is the hardest thing I've ever done. I've never pushed myself so hard.'"
Hewitson said McAuley had found the journey physically "very, very, very hard".
