The mystery of a message in a bottle that arrived on the shores of Australia has been unravelled, revealing the great lengths one whisky bottle travelled.
Belmont teacher Michael Lawrence and son Pete, 13 found the bottle in a cove near Lorne in Victoria on Easter Sunday last year, inside there was a note written in Mandarin.
News of the find reached China where journalists tracked down a Chinese sailor, who threw the bottle overboard five years ago near the coast of Argentina.
Li Haibo, 30, said he was lonely and homesick when he impulsively wrote a note on a page of his diary, tore it off and put it into an empty whiskey bottle, geelongadvertiser.com.au reported.
He threw the bottle overboard, but never believed it would reach land because of the number of reefs across the globe.
Haibo has now sent a video to the Lawrences, inviting them to visit him in China.
The bottle finders said they were very excited to find out the origins of the note and hoped they will be able to travel to China to meet Haibo.
