Heavy snow is causing chaos in the central United States, following a massive winter storm which has killed at least 12 people.

Snow has fallen in 17 states from California to New Hampshire and taken much of the American Midwest and New England by surprise.

The ice and snow has stranded scores of motorists with drifts that shut down major roads and defeated snow ploughs.

Much of New York State is snow bound and record low temperatures have frozen entire cities.

Strong winds created drifts as high as 4.6 metres as the storm dropped as much as 1.2 metres of snow in some areas.

Hundreds of flights were also cancelled, schools were closed and the freezing rain that preceded the snow in many places created hazardous road conditions.

Ski resorts in Utah and Colorado reported as much as one-and-a-half metres of snow.
