An illegal immigrant from Afghanistan has been discovered inside
the Sandhurst royal military academy after sneaking into the elite
army officer training school on a military coach from
Germany.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the stowaway was found in a
stairwell of the coach on Wednesday morning.
The man, whose age is uncertain, was handed over to Thames Valley
Police.
"We can confirm that an individual was discovered on a coach within
the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, having stowed on board during
the coach's transit from Germany," a MoD spokeswoman said on
Thursday.
"The coach was provided and driven by a civilian contractor who has
responsibility for the security of their vehicle," she added.
"Security officers in all Army establishments have been informed
and reminded of security procedures to reduce the risk of a further
incident of this nature."
The Sun newspaper said the head of the British Army, General Sir
Richard Dannatt, was "incandescent" at the incident.
The MoD spokeswoman confirmed he had been angered by reports of the
security breach at the Berkshire academy, but played down the
incident.
Princes William and Harry have both passed through Sandhurst as
part of their army training.
