January 6: Developments in Gaza conflict

Following are developments in the fighting in the Gaza Strip as of 1630 GMT (5:30am NZT Jan 6):

Kerem Shalom Crossing - Some 80 truckloads of humanitarian aid were allowed into the Gaza Strip, the Israeli military said.

Rafah, Gaza Strip - Israeli air strikes targeted smuggling tunnels along the Gaza-Egypt border, the military said.

Ashdod, Israel - A rocket fired from Gaza hits an empty kindergarten in the port city. Gazan militants fired some 30 rockets towards Israel on Monday, the Israeli military said.

Gaza - The bodies of 13 members of the same family were pulled out the rubble of their house east of Gaza City after it was destroyed by Israeli tank fire, medics said. A mother and three children were among the dead, all from the Samouni family.

Gaza - Three children and a woman were killed when an Israeli shell hit their house east of the city of Gaza, hospital officials said.
   
Gaza - A three-year-old Palestinian girl was killed by Israeli army fire in the central Gaza Strip, doctors said. Her father, mother and other family members were wounded.
   
Jabaliya Refugee Camp, Gaza Strip - Two Israeli tank shells exploded in the car park of a Gaza hospital causing damage but no injuries.
   
Gaza - Aircraft drop leaflets over the Strip, vowing to continue Israel's assault against Hamas and its leaders. The Arabic-language leaflets urged residents to evacuate their homes and head to city centres to avoid being harmed.
   
Gaza - Death tolls since December 27: At least 541 Palestinians, three Israeli civilians and two Israeli soldiers.
   
Gaza - Palestinian medics say all but 6 of about 60 people killed since ground assault began late on January 3 were civilians.
   
Jerusalem - Israeli army spokesman says many dozens of Hamas fighters killed in ground offensive. Army says six soldiers wounded overnight, two seriously.
   
Beit Lahiya, Gaza Strip - Witnesses say Israeli forces push into Beit Lahiya, ordering residents to leave. Gun battles in the east of the city of Gaza and in the north of the Strip. Hamas fighters using rocket-propelled grenades and mortars, Israeli fire from planes, helicopters and tanks.
   
Jerusalem - Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak says the city of Gaza almost encircled, cutting it off from the rest of the Strip. Armoured forces have also cut other routes.
   
Jerusalem - Barak says operation goes on until southern Israel can be deemed safe from attacks from Gaza.
   
Beit Hanoun, Gaza Strip - Three people, described by medics as civilians, were killed in a blast at a mourning ceremony.
   
Beach Refugee Camp, Gaza Strip - Seven civilians from one family, the Abu Aishas, were killed in a shell explosion at their home.
   
Gaza - Hamas says its snipers have hit six Israeli soldiers.

Rafah, Gaza Strip - The empty house of Hamas militant leader Mohammed Abu Shammala was bombed by Israeli forces, residents said.
   
Gaza - Four ambulances and three mobile clinics destroyed in bombing at Health Care Union, medical workers and witnesses said.
   
Gaza - Hamas and its ally Islamic Jihad said they fired rockets into Israel, including improvised Kassams and Russian-made Grad, or Katyusha, missiles. Israeli police said 24 rockets landed on Monday, including at Ashdod and Beersheba, both about 30 km from Gaza. No one was hurt.
   
Erez Crossing - Red Cross officials abandoned an effort to bus several dozen foreign passport holders out of the Gaza Strip, citing security concerns near the northern frontier, the Austrian ambassador to Israel told reporters.
