A new centre-left interim coalition government is set to take office in Iceland and will propose April 25 as the date for an early election, the head of one of the coalition parties said.

Steingrimur Sigfusson, head of the Left-Green party, made the comments after the Progressive party said it would support the incoming minority coalition in parliament.

The Left-Green party is forming a coalition with the Social Democrats who will be the senior partner.

"If everything goes as planned now a new government will take over on Sunday afternoon," Sigfusson told reporters.

He added that April 25 was the election date the coalition would aim for.
