Severe winter weather in the UK has worsened, cutting off more areas of the country as heavy snow which caused chaos in the north has now moved south.

While the scene is beautiful from the air, at ground level Britain's worst storm in 30 years is more of an ugly truth.

The south of England is now bearing the brunt with many roads in Hampshire, Berkshire and Kent at a standstill, leaving commuters shivering in their cars.

But the community spirit was prevailing with people walking up and down with flasks offering cups of tea or coffee. Others had bits of food they were sharing with everybody.

Councils are trying to clear the roads with gritters and snow ploughers are hard at work on the major roads.

But it's not much more comfortable for those who stayed at home with widespread power outages.

Further north, the people of Liverpool heeded warnings not to venture out into the cold and the city streets were virtually deserted.

More than 8000 schools across the UK have been closed.

Even the thin blue line proved no match for a thick blanket of white and local communities have dug in.

Airports were crippled as 240 flights in and out of Gatwick were cancelled.

Major sporting fixtures across the country were postponed while others went ahead in less than perfect conditions.

And the big freeze is bringing hazardous conditions to much of northern Europe. The army was called out in eastern Poland to help residents cut off when a local river burst its banks and froze on the roads.

The death toll in Poland from the severe weather has risen to 122 - many of the victims reported to be homeless.

And a cold snap gripping the central US is causing problems for Florida farmers keen to salvage summer crops from freezing temperatures. Fruit has been sprayed with a protective icy layer and covered in plastic to save it from the cold.
