The number of cases of H1N1 influenza confirmed by the World Health Organization stands at 1,003 from 20 countries, WHO chief Margaret Chan said.

But, addressing the UN General Assembly by video link from Geneva, Chan said there was no indication that we are facing a situation similar to that in 1918, when a flu pandemic killed tens of millions.

Portugal was the latest country to confirm its first case of a new strain of flu.

The patient was an individual who had recently been on a holiday in Mexico and was recovering well.
