Italian police are looking for a German couple who left their three children in a pizzeria at the weekend and have not been seen since, local media said.

Waiters in a restaurant in Aosta, northwest Italy, alerted police when they noticed the children, aged eight months, two years and four years, had been left alone at a table after their parents went out for a smoke and never came back.

The parents were later identified as Ina Caterina Remhof, aged 26, and Sascha Schmidt, aged 24, Italian news media said. Their car was found near the restaurant and documents inside enabled police to trace the children's grandmother in Germany.

Police said the parents had a history of drug addiction and economic problems and had been travelling with no luggage. The children are being looked after by Italian social services.
