Flood-affected Fijians are returning to their homes following the country's worst floods in a decade.

Eleven people died in the floods, while thousands have been left homeless and tens of thousands put at risk of respiratory illnesses, malaria and dengue fever.

Fijilive website reported the number of people at the 171 evacuation centres nationwide had dropped from 11,925 to 9743, as people started returning to their homes.

National Disaster Management Office (Dismac) centre director Joeli Cawaki says the organisation was trying its best to help the people at the evacuation centres by distributing supplies.

It estimates total damages at $F31 million but that was expected to rise.

The Fiji Times says a Dismac team arrived at Rauriko village in Dogotuki on Sunday to deliver emergency rations.

The village lost about 60% of its crops, and many homes have been damaged.
