Fijian residents have been warned against more bad weather to come following severe flooding which has left two dead.

The widespread flooding has hit the tourist gateway of Nadi and the northern City of Ba, causing hundreds to evacuate their homes.

Government officials are considering declaring a state of emergency as weather forecasts show there could be several more days of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Tourists have had their holidays cut short because of the flooding.

"It was an inconvenience," said one tourist at Auckland International Airport. "We were about knee deep in water to get to the airport but we made it OK."

Another tourist said it was "raining a deluge. Cats and dogs".

Earlier, a farmer moving stock was killed in the floods and police have since confirmed another death, reported also to be a farmer.

State-owned Fiji Broadcasting reports that a group of tourists were rescued in Nadi last night after rapidly rising flood waters trapped them.

It said the military managed to get to the group and get them to the nearby Nadi international airport.

Denarau may prove to be at greater risk as the Nadi River had recently been dredged.

A spokeswoman for the military regime, Sharon Smith-Johns, last night warned Fijians to "take precautions and listen to news for updates there are concerns that the weather will worsen in the next 12 hours".

There are about 400 New Zealanders registered as being in Fiji right now, ONE News Pacific correspondent Barbara Dreaver told the Breakfast show this morning.
