Sixteen Egyptians were killed on Wednesday when a bus carrying labourers returning from work in Libya collided with a truck attached to a double trailer on a highway near the southern town of Minya, state media reported.

One security source put the death toll in the pre-dawn crash at 15. Two other people were injured in the crash, according to state news agency MENA.

Security sources said the truck had been sitting on the side of the road when the bus hit it from behind, adding that the road was dark and the bus driver may not have seen the truck.

Reckless driving, lax traffic rules and poor road conditions cause many road crashes in Egypt. A series of road and rail accidents in recent years has sparked public outcry over the government's record on transport safety.
