A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Tonga on Sunday morning, but there were no immediate reports of damage, seismologists and local officials said.

The earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometres with the epicentre about 65km east of Hihifo, the United States Geological Survey said on its website.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a tsunami alert.

It is less than two weeks since an earthquake and tsunami disaster killed some 150 people in the region, in Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga.

Waikato Hospital theatre nurse Debbie Ratima is in Apia helping with the clean up from the first quake and says she had no idea there had been another tremor.
