Hundreds of dogs have been saved from becoming dinner meat after Chinese activists surrounded the truck they were being transported in.

The CNN website reported the dogs were on their way to Beijing restaurants when a suspicious driver manoeuvred his vehicle in front of the truck to stop it.

He then alerted activists on a blog and around 200 turned up to surround the truck.

After a long stand-off, the activists freed the dogs by agreeing to purchase them for 115,000 yuan ($22,000).

CNN said many of the dogs saved had collars and nametags, meaning they were probably stolen.

The truck-driver is not likely to be charged, according to local media, because of lax animal protection laws.
