Details have begun to emerge about police shooting that killed four police officers in Lakewood, Washington.
The four officers, three men and a woman, were ambushed at a Washington state coffee house near the McChord Air Force Base.
The officers were sitting in the coffee house prior to their shifts. They were on their laptops planning their day's shift when the gunman walked in and shot them death.
"This was a targeted, selected ambush," Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer said.
He said a gunman came inside, opened fire and shot all four officers. Two baristas and other customers inside the shop were unharmed - "just the law enforcement officers were targeted."
Two officers were shot while still seated, the third was shot while trying to confront the gunman and the fourth officer fought with the gunman and managed to fire his weapon several times but it is unclear if the suspect was hit Troyer says. The officers were wearing bulletproof vests at the time.
The officers are from one patrol unit, including a sergeant from the Lakewood police.
A $10,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest.
The man is described by one witness as a "scruffy looking" African-American in his 20s or 30s, wearing a black jacket over a grey hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. A white pickup truck in the car park of a nearby supermarket has been tagged as evidence.
A couple of months ago another officer in the area was assassinated in his police car, however, there is no suggestion the two incidents are connected.
