People in Tonga and Niue are being advised to hunker down and prepare for the worst from Cyclone Rene.
The storm has ripped over American Samoa with winds of up to 144kph, forcing the closure of Pago Pago International Airport as well as government departments and schools.
It is now moving southwest and forecasters expect it to hit Tonga on Monday or Tuesday.
Latitate Waqaicelua from the Fiji Metservice says the cyclone is currently a category three, but it is rapidly becoming more intense and is expected to reach a category four when it is right over Tonga.
Winds are expected to rise to 165km/hour during the next 24 hours.
