A controversial Austrian experiment, in which 29 live pigs were going to be buried under masses of snow in a study about avalanche survival, has been called off.
MSNBC says scientists decided to stop the experiment because of growing pressure from activists.
The study was to focus on what factors make it possible for humans to survive an avalanche without suffering brain damage.
Scientists had argued that the pigs were sedated and that approval for the experiment had been given by the relevant authorities.
