In a world facing harsh times like recession, terrorism and war, it is good to know the world still has the decency to produce stories that just make you go ... Huh?

And there have been a few of those in 2009.

Like the story of the man in Brazil who heard he had died and decided to attend his own funeral - truly the reports of his death were greatly exaggerated.

It helps, I guess, that it happened on a day when Brazilians remember all those who have died.

And what about that pig in Australia suffering a bad case of flatulence? Everyone loves the occasional fart joke, especially when they concern a very fat pig in Australia!

Leaving aside the fart stories for now (one was enough, we are a respectable website after all), in a world where the average Joe is addicted to social networking sites including Facebook and Twitter, a Maryland groom took it to a whole new level.

After being pronounced "husband and wife" he updated his Twitter and Facebook accounts at the altar! And his new wife didn't think it was weird at all - this is truly a match made in online heaven!

And anyone remember that story about the female fox in Germany with a shoe fetish, stealing and then hoarding more than 100 shoes in its den. That's still unexplainable. Who does she think she is? The Imelda Marcos of the animal kingdom? Hmm, Imelda Mar'Fox' maybe.

And finally, think we Kiwis hadn't made it into space before the launch of that rocket last month?

Well, think again - a celestial Kiwi, in the shape of our native bird, was found in the skies by an astrophotographer (yeah, such a job exists) from New Zealand's internationally renowned Mt John Observatory. So what if it is 26,000 light years away - that Kiwi is still representin'!
