A Somali man's been charged with the attempted murder of a Danish cartoonist, known for his controversial drawings of the prophet Mohammed.

The Somali man appeared in court on a stretcher after he was shot and wounded by police as he tried to break into the home of Kurt Westergaard , who's been receiving death threats since newspapers published his cartoons four years ago.

The Danish court prosecutor says police had no choice but to shoot the attacker who threw an axe at a policeman as he was trying to break into the house.

The 28-year-old invader says he was trying to frighten Westergaard, not harm him.

Westergaard's cartoons upset the Muslim world with their depiction of the prophet Muhammad when they were published in a high-circulation newspaper.
