A five-year-old British boy of Pakistani origin has been kidnapped during a robbery in Pakistan, police say.

The boy was kidnapped on Wednesday night at a family home in the town of Jhelum, 120 km southeast of Islamabad.

"The robbers took away 150,000 rupees ($4,775) and some gold.

When the family started crying the robbers also took away the child," says senior Jhelum police official Shahbaz Ahmed Hanjra.

The British High Commission has confirmed the boy is British.

"A five-year-old boy has been kidnapped. We're in touch with his family and the local authorities are investigating," says a High Commission spokesman.

There is no indication of any motive other than robbery.

The boy's father, Raja Naqqash Saeed, has told the BBC he would swap places with his son.

"I don't have anything, I don't have any money at all, so how can I arrange big money for them," he said.

"They can take me if they want, I'll go there. They can call me whenever they want, just let my son come back. He's only five years old."

"He's really, really soft-hearted. He loves everyone," Saeed says.
