Two ceremonial guards at the Tower of London have been sacked after an investigation upheld claims that they harassed the first woman to join their ranks at the 11th century castle.

Officials say the unnamed Yeoman Warders, known as Beefeaters, were suspended after the only woman to have ever become a warder in the Tower's 500-year history accused them of harassment.

Moira Cameron, who joined the group in 2007, said her uniform was defaced, rude notes were left in her locker and her Wikipedia entry was defaced.

"In light of the evidence that emerged, the investigation concluded that the allegations had foundation and that disciplinary action was appropriate," the body that runs the Tower says in a statement.

"Everyone is entitled to work in an environment free from any form of harassment."

The investigation has cleared a third member of staff at the popular tourist attraction on the north side of the River Thames in central London.

With their scarlet and dark blue tunics and red and gold uniform for special occasions, the Beefeaters are among the best known symbols of the capital.

Formed in 1509 as a royal bodyguard, their modern role includes guarding the Crown Jewels and giving tours of the fortress established by William the Conqueror in the 11th century.

Beefeaters are drawn from the armed forces and their nickname is thought to derive from their permission to eat as much beef as they wanted from the king's table.
