A woman has been caught trying to smuggle 1.4kg of heroin into Australia hidden in her sneakers, authorities say.

Customs officers stopped the woman, who has arrived at Sydney airport on a flight from Vietnam on Sunday, for a baggage search but became suspicious and x-rayed her shoes and found heroin hidden in the soles.

A 56-year-old woman, from Merrylands in Sydney's west, has been charged with importing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug.

She was due to face Sydney's Central Local Court later on Monday.
