The federal government is planning to tighten its immigration policies, potentially preventing 20,000 applicants from entering the country.

Cooks, hairdressers and accountants from overseas will have their immigration applications torn up as part of the change, newspaper reports say.

Priority will instead go to highly skilled workers such as doctors, nurses and high school teachers who are sponsored by employers.

It is part of an overhaul to be announced on Monday, the reports say.

In future the system could also favour certain high-value jobs and those who went to top universities, have good English language skills or who have more experience.

The government is attempting to do away with unsponsored migrants because only half end up in their chosen field, News Ltd says.

Fairfax says the government will abolish the current skills-in-demand list, which contains 106 occupations, and review the points test used to assess migrants.
