Auckland has been ranked the world's third most liveable city in a quality of living survey, jumping one place from fourth in 2010.
Vienna topped the Mercer Quality of Living Survey list, followed by Zurich in second. Other cities in the Asia-Pacific region were Sydney at number 11 and Wellington at 13. Baghdad came in at last place.
Auckland Mayor Len Brown says the city is well on track to becoming the world's most liveable city.
"International indicators like this give us a global profile, and are proof of what Aucklanders already know; this is a fantastic city to live in," said Brown.
"Moving up a place on the scale is no small feat and I look forward to one day celebrating our place at the top of that list."
Mercer's global survey is based on an evaluation of 39 criteria for each city, grouped in 10 categories, including political and socio-economic environment, medical and health considerations, education, transport, housing and the natural environment.
The survey covers 221 cities, which are compared to New York as the base city, measuring quality of life and working conditions for overseas expatriates.

one would have to assume that south Auckland was counted as a different city...

All subjective, though. Everyone has their own preferences for what they like about a city. I guess it's nice to know where we rank in terms of this survey.
