Officials in the Philippines have raised the alert level at the country's most active volcano after a lava spill was observed at its crater.

Residents have been warned not to venture near Mayon volcano because of fears of sudden eruptions.

Mayon has erupted around 50 times over the past four centuries, the last time in 2001.

More than 1,000 people are believed to have died when the volcano blew in 1814.
